IBYC Sailor Stripes Program

IBYC Sailor Stripes is a recognition program for sailing level advancement.

You will see young sailors at Island Bay walking around and sailing with these rank insignia bands on their life jackets. Green through yellow are Beginners, Orange through white are Intermediates and Red through black are advanced sailors.

Ninja

Independent Sailor in winds up to 18 mph

  1. Top Rank

  2. Completed 2 years in the IBYC Jr.Sailing Program

  3. Junior Racing Team

Wind Whisperer

Able to control multiple different types of boats

  1. Properly adjust sail controls

  2. Steer with body and weight

  3. Anticipate and prepare for wind shifts

Regatta Rookie

Competed in first Regatta event outside of Camp

Sailed all races possible in the event in a sports-man like manner

Intermediate

Wave Rider

Participated in On-The-Water Festival

  1. Able to complete 7 of 10 challenges during the event.

  2. Consistent and proper equipment care and repair

Sea Scholar

Excellent Boat Control

  1. Sail backwards 250 yards.

  2. Jibe consistently and safely in 10-15 mph winds

Tiller Tamer

Smooth Operator

  1. Mark Rounding with sail trim and controlled steering

  2. Start and stop control

  3. Ease and trim using two hands

Beginner

Sail in any direction

Able to sail upwind a distance of .25 miles with consistency.

Wind Watcher

Developing Sailor

  1. Dock Independently

  2. Stop/Start with control

  3. Tack and Jibe safely in different conditions

  4. Consistently steer properly with tiller extension in the proper position
